"Neurons that fire together, wire together"

There’s a great quote from neuroscience: “neurons that fire together, wire together”, essentially meaning that brain cells that often communicate with each other build stronger connections between them. It is sometimes referred to as the theory of Hebbian learning, but that doesn’t have quite the same rhyme to it! It is how our thoughts and behaviours become automatic over time. So, the more we dwell on negative thoughts of anxiety and worry, the more entrenched those thought patterns become. We may not even be aware of these automated thoughts as they go round and round in our minds. But we can break the loop by interrupting it, by changing our direction of focus. And because of the neuro-plasticity, or flexibility, of the brain, we can start to re-wire how our brain works by re-directing our thoughts in a more positive way. This is what happens when we use positive mantras, gratitude practices, or even just focusing on our breath.

We can, quite simply, change the programming of our brain!

And for me, it has really worked. For the past month, I’ve introduced a very simple new practice into my daily routine that has had quite a profound effect on my mindset. Every morning, I check in with how I’m feeling and then spend just a couple of minutes searching the internet for an inspirational quote or positive affirmation to focus on for the rest of the day. Sometimes, I find a few that seem relevant, and I write them down in my daily journal, taking just a few moments to reflect on them and feel their powerful, positive message.

The reason this has really helped is that it pulls my mind away from the anxious thoughts and feelings I often experience at the start of the day when I start to think of everything that needs to be done, and instead encourages me to focus on a positive, inspiring and empowering message.

I will be sharing these positive quotes in my Facebook and Instagram storyline, so make sure you follow. But you may also want to spend just a few minutes each day finding your own inspiration that suit whatever you need to focus on at a particular moment. And I’d love to hear from you in the comments below what your favourite quotes or affirmations are, so we can all be inspired by them.
